Final Fantasy X Preview
New Battle System After so many years of the same old battle system, Squaresoft decided it was time for a change. Needless to say, the original ATB (active time battle) is history. Instead of having to be on your guard all the time to keep one step ahead of your foes, you could go out to eat during one of the characters turns (not that you would, but you could). During a character's turn all actions cease. Another significant change is that during the turn you can choose the action to be to change another party member in (so, if you change people out carefully, you could ultimately fight with each of your party members in turn). The last significant change noted in the battle system is the change in ways of improving your skills. Instead of EXP meters there is a sphere table. After battle you pick up "spheres" of one of the four types: magic, ability, power, and speed spheres. You can spend these spheres on the sphere table and eventually level up and learn new abilities.
Guardian Forces/Eidolons Another significant change in FFX as apposed to all the other Final Fantasies is that when you summon GFs/Eidolons, they join the team for the rest of the battle, and become controllable characters. They still have super-damaging moves (i.e. "dark flare", "diamond dust" etc.) but they are like limit breaks (actually called overdrive in FFX). One more thing is a neat little feature called overkill. If you deal more damage to a foe than it has HP, you'll receive better spoils after the battle so be sure to use the strongest thing you've got.
Where'd the Map Go?!?!? Perhaps the most noticable change in the new installment of Final Fantasy is that instead of having that little tiny character in the middle of the big screen of fields when you go from town to town, you actually have to travel across deserts and plains on foot, not to worry though as the cities aren't far apart and won't strain your party or your thumb.
